de 50 duizend euro lijst

Ik probeer mijn aankoopgedrag van kunst te rationaliseren.

In mijn jeugd rekende ik elke aankoop om naar ceedees. Een cd kostte 40 gulden. Dus iets van 200 gulden was 5 ceedees waard.Het duurste wat ik rond die tijd kocht was een stereortoren (40 ceedees) en mijn eigen bijdrage voor het schoolreisje naar Griekenland was 25 ceedees. (Mijn ouders waren wel goed maar niet gek.)

Nu gaan de euro's veel harder uit mijn portemonnee dan toen ik puber was en de ceedees voldoen niet meer.

Te vaak heb ik nog impulsaankopen gedaan.Daar ben ik nooit ontevreden over maar ik wil wel beter weten wat ik mis.

Hierom ben ik begonnen aan de 50 duizend euro lijst. Welke kunst zou ik kopen als ik nu 50 k euro zou hebben? De kans dat ik ooit krijg is niet groot, maar dar gaat het niet om. Ik wil elke mooi nieuwe werk dat ik zie kunnen vergelijken met de werken die ik sowieso wil kopen.

Afgelopen zaterdag liep ik bij withtsjalling tegen dit werk aan van Lilian Kreutzberger.
Mijn telefoon heeft een erg slechte camera, maar je moet een idee kunnen krijgen.
Het is een donker geschilderd interieur van 50 x 60 cm. Met een prijs van 1400 euri staat het op de lijst.

Op welke plek dat weet ik nog niet...
Ik ben wel van plan de eerste 10 plaatsen te publiceren.

''t Wordt weer tijd om deze blog weer bij te houden.

Laatste nieuws dat ik de foto van Cara van de Puttelaar heb opgehaald bij het AMC. Dit was mijn leukste ziekenhuisbezoek ooit.

De volgende post zullen gaan over mijn slechtse kwaliteit: beheer.
Het is veel leuker om eem kunstwerk te kopen dan om om het op te hangen op te slaan , administreren etctetra.

Maar aangezien ik zelf niet weet hoeveel werken ik bezit en wat die enigszins waard zijn. (de helft van de aankoopwaarde dat wel) Verzekering wordt ook een mooi issue.

eindexamenexposities

De eindexamenexposities ~~komen er weer aan; Sterker in Rotterdam~~ zijn ze al bijna afgelopen.

Voor mij het moment om te kijken of er leuk nieuw talent rondloopt. en sowieso is er genoeg leuke kunst te zien. Ik moet zelf nog bepalen waar ik naartoe ga.
Ik ga morgn (zondag de 11e) nog naar de GRA, dat was het dan weer voor dit jaar.

Hieronder heb ik een incompleet lijstje gemaakt van de open dagen: bij Artez ben ik afgehaakt teveel verschillende exposities op teveel locaties.
Degenen die voorbij zijn streep ik door en geef ik commentaar over als ik er ben geweest.

Deze is voorbij. Ik ben geweest heb een paar echt leuke dingen gezien, nog meegewerkt aan een boom van papier maché door een krant te versnipperen. Een werk van Annelies Bakker. Dit is de ultieme recycling, bomen maken van kranten.

Ik had niet veel tijd dit weekend en ben alleen maar de Tractieweg geweest. (ligt op 5 minuten fietsen van mijn huis)
Dit is voor mij wel het leukste deel omdat Fine Art het minst toegepast is.

Gezien mijn verzameling met veel fotografie lijkt het meer in de rede te liggen naar de IBB-laan te gaan waar het werk van de studenten fotografie getoond wordt. Deze opleiding concentreert zich echter op documentaire fotografie. Ik heb altijd moeite om te bepalen wanneer documentaire fotografie kunst is. Ik vind het vaak journalistiek. Ik bezit overigens wel documentaire fotografie van een oud-HKU studente, dus ik ben soms wel ontvankelijk voor documentaire fotografie. Maar daar heb ik nu geen aandacht aan besteed.

Dus ik ben twee keer voor ruim een uur naar de Tractieweg geweest: Niet alles tegelijk want zoveel kunst houd ik niet vol. Dat zijn teveel verschillende beelden.

Zij maakt nog veel meer diverser werk dan dit, op haar website staat al meer, maar in haar portfolio die rondzwierf zag ik nog veel meer niet video-werk. Maar dit onderstaande is lekker toegankelijk.

Ook al even andacht voor het project van Eva Bullens. Zij is per Huiffiets gedurende 2,5 week door Nederland getrokken. Op de expositie stond de fiets en de film die zij daarvan maakte.

Koninklijke academie in Den Haag
De eindexamen expo 2010 is van zaterdag 26 juni (diploma uitreiking) tot en met zaterdag 3 juli. Prinsessegracht 4 Den Haag.

Voor het eerst van mijn leven geweest: lekker dicht bij het centraal station. Mooiste feature van het gebouw is de eigen galerie die me deed denken aan de oude zalen van het van Abbe-museum. (Het gebouw stamt ook ui de jaren dertig.) Daar werd ook zeer spectaculaire kunst getoond. een replica van een dertig millimeter kanon, gemaakt uit een door mij niet geidentificeerde substantie.
Voor de rest was de kunst standaard eindexamenexpositie voor zover een eindexamenexpositie standaard kan zijn.

Toch nog even aandacht voor het werk van Eveline Claus (ik zie graag fotografie van een niet-fotograaf.) en Birgit Verwer. (maatschappijkitiek: het kan nog)

Bij Planetart in het oude Volkskrant gebouw aan de Wibautstraat 150 is nu de opening van een tentoonstelling van Jo Benink

In deze tentoosntelling een 4-tal videos meestal van haar performances en een drietal foto's. Waarvan 1 met een twist. (Hoe vreemd.) Een heel aardig overzicht van haar huidige werk.

We like art

We like art is een site met goedkope topkunst. Althans onder de 1500 euro, zeker de moeite waard om regelmatig op te kijken als je belangstelling hebt voor kunst. Ik heb al eerder over deze site bericht toen ik mijn 2e Carla van de Puttelaar heb gekocht. (Deze is overigens nog steeds niet geleverd.)

Er zijn echter nog meer manieren om goedkoop aan kunst te komen.
Ongeveer twee jaar geleden heb ik drie foto's gekocht van Elvi. (Volgens de burgerlijke stand heet ze anders, maar haar echte naam vermijdt ze heel zorgvuldig.)

De bovenste heb ik zeker, de onderste weet ik niet zeker. Zoals eerder gezegd mijn beheer over mijn kunst is niet fantastisch.
Als ik de onderste niet heb zal ik hem zeker een keer aanschaffen.

Zij heeft een zomeraanbieding. Voor 5 tientjes een foto op 30x30 of A3 formaat.
Er is keuze uit minimaal 30 foto's.
A3 vind ik een mooi formaat voor haar foto's. Al zou ik zelf over een iets groter formaat nadenken.

Klik de links en oordeel zelf.

Waarom heeft ze die foto-actie? Ze wil naar de USA beter gezegd naar LA en dat zonder rijbewijs. Daarnaast kan ze wat extra budget gebruiken.
Dus gebruik dat vakantiegeld om een mooie foto te kopen en stuur Elvi naar LA.

Een nieuwtje: ik heb mijn eerste kunstwerk "geleend" bij de kunstuitleen van het CBK zuid-oost (Amsterdam). Dit lenen kost 12 euro per maand. (daarom is het ook meer huren) Het is wel een fractie van de waarde van het werk en het is zelfs verzekerd.
Het leukste van dit systeem is dat het lenen voor onbepaalde tijd is. Als ik wil kan ik het kopen of blijven huren of gewoon teruggeven aan de Amsterdammers.

Het werk had ik ongveer een jaar geleden gezien en onthouden. Afgelopen week de kans gegrepen die mij geboden werd.

Het werk zelf is een foto van een conceptueel bloemstuk. Het heeft een nogal kunstmatig kleurtje.
De maakster Lotte Geeven doet wel meer met kleur en bloemen. Op ArtAmsterdam had ze de stand van Kunstbeeld aangekleed door een soort bos te maken met gekleurde spotjes erop. Dat heeft duidelijk raakvlakken.

Oops I did it again

Tot en met vandaag is het ArtAmsterdam. Traditiegetrouw koop ik daar een kunstwerk.
Dit jaar is het budget op.

Maar ja wat doen je dan als je een buitenkans tegenkomt.

Ik kocht deze bij Zam-magazine en ik kan hem betalen in 6 termijnen van 2 maanden. dus de helft komt ten laste van het budget van volgend jaar :-)

en voor degene die hem nog niet herkend hadden. Dit is een portret van een jonge Nelson Mandela door Marlene Dumas.

Gezien haar reguliere prijsniveau had ik nooit verwacht iets van haar in bezit te kunnen krijgen, maar dat gaat dus wel gebeuren. Bij dot sort buitenkansjes moet je je altid afvragen of het werk wel goed genoeg is. Ik eil niet een werk kopen van een bekende naam, alleen vanwege de bekende naam. (ik heb hierom wel eens een foto van Rineke Dijkstra laten lopen) Gelukkig vind ik dit ook een krachtig portret. Dus dat zit wel goed.

Nog als laatste, mijn vorige post ging over de regels: Marlene Dumas is mijn 6e nieuwe kunstenaar dit jaar. Dus die ik heb ik alweer gebroken.

De doelstelling van dit blog is om proberen lijn te houden in mijn kunstverzameling.

Ik heb maar beperkte middelen om een verzameling op te bouwen en heb daardoor weinig geld om missers te maken. Door beter naar mijn eigen aankoopgedrag te kijken wil ik proberen dat in regels vast te leggen.

Daarvoor heb ik nu de volgende regels:

Ik verzamel alleen hedendaagse kunst gemaakt door Nederlandse vrouwen
Ik beperk mijn kunstenaars door maximaal van 5 nieuwe kunstenaars per jaar te kopen (vanaf 2010)
De kunst moet (tijdelijk) passen binnen mijn huis of tuin. (rekening houden met de grootte daarvan en de aanwezigheid van mijn kat)
De kunst moet passen binnen de clusters van huidige kunst die al heb.

de clusters zijn:
-vervreemding/surrealisme
- naakten
- portretten
- relaties met modefotografie

- maatschappelijk geëngageerde kunst
- 2d/3d spel

- menselijke relaties naar elkaar of naar omgeving

De clusters heb ik overigens zojuist gedefinieerd dus daar zullen nog wel verschuivingen in plaats vinden.
Ik heb dus geen criteria over de techniek van het werk.

Houd ik me nu aan deze regels:
Vorig jaar heb ik van 28 verschillende kunstenaars gekocht van wie 24 vrouwen. Allen waren Nederlands.
Dit jaar heb ik werk gekocht van 8 verschillende kunstenaars van wie er 5 nieuw zijn.
Allen waren Nederlands en allen waren vrouw.
Dit betekent dat ik niet meer mag kopen van kunstenaars van wie ik nog geen werk heb.
Dat zal niet heel moeilijk zijn want het geld is op.
Het is tijd om te sparen.

Als uitsmijter twee werken:
Ze zijn van Suzanne Jongmans. (vrouw en Nederlands)
Het zijn beide protretten.
Een daarvan is een naakt.
In beide zit een stukje surrealisme.
De naakte baadster lijkt op een 17e eeuws schilderij qua compositie maar bevindt zich in een 20e eeuwse badkamer waarbij de baadse een knoert van een tatoeage heeft.
Desiree heeft ook trekken van en normaal vrouwenportret in 17e eeuwse stijl, totdat je haar horloge ziet.

Art Brussel 2010

Vorig jaar was ik één dag en kort naar Art Brussel geweest. De beurs had mij aangenaam verrast door het internationaal karakter daarvan en slechts op 2 uur rijden van Utrecht. Ik heb er vaak langer over gedaan om op mijn werk te komen.
Dit jaar bem ik twee keer naar ArtBrussel geweest: de preview plus opening en de laatste dag. beide keren had ik een kunstenaar uit Amsterdam meegebracht om inspiratie op te doen. Het leuke van ArtBrussel is dat er maar weinig galleries uit Belgie zijn een handvol uit Nederland en de rest uit Duitsland Frankrijk, OOstenrijk Zwitserland, Groot-Brittanie etcetera. Ik kwam zelfs Hauser en en Wirth tegen, een galerie met oa Louise Bourgeois en Paul MacCarthy in de stal. Als je daar iets wilt kopen is een heel vette bankrekening niet genoeg. Je moet ook vriendelijk vragen of je iets mag kopen. Mar dat geldt ook al voor de Nederlandse galerie Gabriel Rolt die ook op de beurs stond met Desiree Dolron. Als je 50 000 euro meeneemt kom je op de wachtlijst voor een foto. Die is wel zo goed dat menig persoon drie leer moet kijken om te zien dat het echt een foto is en geen schilderij.
Het verschil met Art Amsterdan is er groot: Brussel heeft 175 stands met 150 buitenlanders, Amsterdam 120 stands met 30 buitenlanders.
Vreemd genoeg is daard oor qua kunst kopen Amsterdam interessanter voor mij, aangezien ik vrijwel alleen Nederlamders koop. Maar Brussel heb ik nodig om de kwaliteitsstandaard te bepalen waartegen ik de kunst koop.
De kwaliteit was hoog.

De tweede dag was ik met Rosalie Ravensteijn en zij heeft de handige methode om overal foto's van te nemen.
Ik kreeg gister de CD-rom binnen en daar zal ik nu uit putten.

Ik wil beginnen met een werk van de Vlaamse Berlinde De Bruyckere, die ook vertegnwoordigd wordt door Hauser en Wirth.

Het hoeft geen betoog da haar organisch sculpturen van 30 meter afstand zijn te herkennen.

Ze stopt ook rustig een paardenhuid in een kast als zij dat artistiek wil en ze heeft een paar mensen in dienst om haar daarbij te helpen. (Zij is ongeveer 1,70 m en zo'n 65kg)

Naast de standaard galeries waren er enkele losse kunstenaars projecten. daarvan had er 1 zich gericht op geur. Zoals de geur van sigaretten...

ik bedenk me dat ik binnenkort naar mijn Duitse tandarts moet...

Het werk is levensgroot zoals zichtbaar is met een actiefoto van mij.

Om enigszins een idee te geven van de grootte van de beurs. Ik heb 2 maal 6 uur op de beurs gelopen, maar nog niet het idee dat ik alles heb gezien.

Art Brussel gaat om de inhoud en daardoor zijn de stands lelijk en eenvormig.

De kunst kan conceptueel ook eenvoudig zijn

De onderstaande rode compositie is van de Deense Brigitte Waldach.

Sommige werken zijn dubbelzinnig: dit lijkt een 2-dimensionaal werk een octopus of zo

Bij nadere bestudering blijkt het uit slangetjes te bestaan

Bij sommige werken echter is het heel duidelijk dat ze uit sculpturen bestaan (let op de sokken!)

Sommige schilderijen zoals de ze bij Gabriel Rolt zijn verontrustend

andere werken zijn niet goed te fotograferen zoals deze spiegels, onze fotograaf Rosalie is hier wel goed in zichtbaar.

Maar soms gaat het wel goed zoals dze constellatie van een gebroken en een hele spiegel, waarin ik wederom te zien ben.

AtBrussle was duidelijk kijken, kijken niet kopen zoals het een echte Nederlander betaamt.

Want gezien mijn gebrek aan geld van dit moment kon ik zeker niks kopen (op de catalogus na)

Waarom dat gebrek aan geld....

niet verzamelbaar

Zoals Jo Benink ook al achterhaalde staat zij in de lijst nog niet aangekochte maar wel onder belangstelling staande kunstenaars.
Dit heeft ze niet alleen te danken aan haar verkoopbaar werk.

Dit komt ook hoe zij zich als kunstenaar manifesteert. In haar eindexamenwerk kritiseerde ze Joseph Klibanksy. Ze maakte een parodie op zijn kunstenaarsstijl. Het is idd nogal leeg en oppervlakkig hoe hij zich uit. Zijn statement over kunst gaat alleen over de vorm: "Zijn werk kan het beste omschreven worden als grafisch, dynamisch, kleurrijk en fantasievol, vaak surrealistisch."
Dit uitte zich tijdens de eindexamententoonstelling op de Gerrit Reitveld academie in twee performances. In de ene had ze een galerie gemaakt waarin zij snel multiples maakte en een keurig aangeklede secretaresse. (zo zie ik ze niet vaak in galeries) als mooi front- office voor het geheel zit.
Deel twee van de performance was een veiling van multiples die zij tijdens die veiling ff maakte. Deze werden nog echt verkocht ook voor ongeveer 25 euro per stuk een echte Jo Benink....

Haar site http://www.hookers-of-the-system.com/ spreekt met de naam al boekdelen. Hierop staan twee filmpjes van 2 andere performances op.
In Arti et Amicitiae (voor de kunst en de vriendschap) werden afgelopen maand performances georganiseerd.
Jo was er bij, ze omschrijft haar werk als "Centraal in mijn werk staat de vrouw in de Westers maatschappij, de verschillende systemen waarin ze leeft en waar ze haar identiteit vandaan haalt."
Vergelijk het statement van Klibansky en herken de 101 verschillen.

De performance van Jo vond plaats in een zwarte ruimte. de performance heette "eating". Hierin werd een film geprojecteerd van een kat die met een muis speelt. Katten spelen graag met hun eten dus dat duurt wel 10 minuten voordat de muis het loodje legt.
Deze video werd niet geprojecteerd op scherm, maar op Jo. Zij stond daar naakt, strak voor haar uit kijkend als een wassen beeld.
Als toeschouwer zag je dus twee beelden. Een kat die met een muis speelt en een naakte jonge vrouw waarop een video geprojecteerd wordt. Zelf stond ik er eerst wat schuin voor en zag ik meer een blote jonge vrouw. Bij mij als een hetero man neemt de hersenschors wel eens vrijaf bij het zien van vrouwelijke ronde vormen. Maar ja, in essentie is er niet veel erotisch aan een blote vrouw die zich als wassen standbeeld gedraagt. Ik verschoof richting beamer en mijn aandacht verschoof naar de projectie. Katten spelen graag met hun eten en muizen kunnen heel wat tikken hebben. Uit ervaring weet ik dat alhoewel een muis dood lijkt deze zo weer ergens verborgen zit. Deze kat liet haar teen niet lang lopen en speelde zeker tien minuten met de muis. Dit was niet altijd goed te volgen. Jo vulde maar een kwart van het beeld, waardoor het niet altijd duidelijk was wat de kat deed en ook het camerawerk was nogal onrustig omdat constant gepoogd werd om kat en muis te volgen.
Dit ging zeker tien minuten door.
Daarna was de projectie klaar en eindelijk was het aan Jo voor de laatste handeling. In haar hand bleek ze al die tijd een appel te hebben verstopt. Zij nam een hap een at deze op.
Einde performance en we waren weer terug bij haar statement: de rol van de vrouw in de westerse maatschappij.

Performances zijn niet verzamelbaar, maar ze geven wel meerwaarde aan het verzamelbaar werk van een kunstenaar.

Soms gaan zaken niet geheel volgens wens.

Ik had midden juli 2009 een werk van Tove Eversteijn gekocht via artolive.
Dit werd na wat moeilijkheden geleverd (in een dekbedhoes) op het ministerie van Economische zaken waar ik toen werkte.

Hierna werd het steeds schimmiger. het werk is echt groot, bestaande uit foto van 120 bij 80 cm en tl-balk.
Daar moest een plek voor gevonden worden en een handige nanier om het op te hangen. De foto is slechts versterkt met een dunne laag karton. Op de langere termijn is dat niet duurzaam. De plek die ik in gedachte had is ingenomen door een ander groot werk. Ik ging op vakantie iets na levering en vlak daarna weer. Vervolgens begon ik meet een studie kunstgeschiedenis.Oftewel het werk raakte uit mijn gezichtsveld.
Bij het werk van Tove zat een briefje om contact te leggen met mij als koper. Een verkopende kunstenaar bij Artolive weet namelijk niet wie er gekocht heeft.Dat briefje is ergens op mijn bureau beland maar daar heb ik vandaag op gereageerd.
Dat was de missie van april 2010.

Mijn missie in mei 2010 wordt om een mooie plek te vinden voor het werk.

Ik ben bezig met het updaten van mijn blog.
Ik heb de moor mar jammer lijst weggehaald. Opmerkelijk is dat 1 naam daarvan in mijn "kunstenaars in verzameling" is beland (Erwin Olaf) en 1 in de watchlist, Hellen van Meene. Regulier vind ik haar te duur, maar er is 1 foto van haar te koop voor 800 euro en er is een kans dat ik daar ooit nog wel een gaatje voor heb.
Die watchlist laat ik niet groter groeien dan 10 personen. Hij is nu 10 personen groot dus de volgende persoon erin betekent 1 er uit. (Of ik koop een werk van 1 van die tien.)

Ik heb uiteraard ook de "kunstenaars in verzameling"" bijgewerkt. Dat zijn nu 61 verschillende kunstenaars, van wie 1 duo dus totaal 62 personen. Dat loopt wel aardig uit de klauwen, al probeer zo min mogelijk nieuwe kunstenaars te verzamelen. Ik vermoed dat er dit jaar nog 1 of 2 bijkomen, maar ik wil het toch niet hoger laten worden dan 63 dit jaar.
Ik heb voor het gemak wel de personen meegeteld van wie ik werk heb gekocht maar dat nog niet geleverd is.

Dat zijn maar twee personen op dit moment: Een van hen kwam ik tegen toen ik werk afhaalde van Francine Steegs bij het Grafisch Atelier in Den Bosch. (ik kwam net van Gallerie Pennings waar ik ook net twee foto's had gekocht maar daarover later)
Er was net een tentoonstelling aan de gang van 5 kunstenaars. (krantenartikel daarover) Van Sarah van den Dungen viel het werk het meest op en het was nog goed betaalbaar ook. Zij maakt tekeningen. (zowaar geen fotografie) en beeldt relaties uit tussen mensen onderling en tussen mens en dier.
Ik heb 3 etsjes (10 bij 10 cm) van haar gekocht.

verzamelaars onder elkaar

De NGA (Nederlandse Gallerie associatie) had Motivaction (een bureau voor trend- en marktonderzoek) gevraagd om onderzoek te doen naar wat galleries anders/beter moeten gaan doen.

Eén van de methoden die ze daarvoor gebruiken is een rondetafel gesprek met kunstverzamelaars.
Samen met 7 andere verzamelaars zat ik in een kelder aan de Nassaukade te Amsterdam.

Wat viel mij op ? Ik was met afstand, 15 jaar minimaal, de jongste van het gezelschap. Ik koop veel minder via galleries dan de anderen. Ik koop goedkoper en daarom ook meer.
Ook kan het mij niet zo heel veel schelen of een kunstenaar internationaal gaat doorbreken. Ik vind het uiteraard wel leuk, maar mijn collectie hoeft echt niet waardevast te zijn.

Fotografie was ook wel een leuk punt. Voor mij behoort dit vanzelfsprekend bij kunst en dus in mijn verzameling. Er waren enkele verzamelaars die er (net) niet aan wilden. Deze behoorden overigens wel tot de oudere garde. (70-plussers)

Het gesprek kwam ook nog over de Kunstkoopregeling en die andere regeling de nationale Kunstkoop. Het lijkt overigens wel of elke gallerie in Nederland wel aan zo'n regeling mee doet.
De verzamelaars hadden een duidelijke voorkeur voor de Kunstkoopregeling, maar dat kwam vanwege de galleries die daarbij zijn aangesloten. Het topsegment van de markt zit namelijk meer bij deze regeling van de Mondriaanstichting.
Er was 1 persoon die zelfs 10 leningen had lopen. Dat ging overigens over een totaalbedrag dat akelig dicht in de buurt van mijn netto maandinkomen ging.
Deze KKR wordt gesubsidieerd door de Mondriaan Stichting. Deze betaalt de rente van de lening. Met de huidige rentestand van 7% en de termijn van 36 maanden is dat een subsidie van zo'n 10%. Dit lijkt een subsidie aan de verzamelaars, maar is eerder een subsidie voor de kunstenaars. Deze krijgen rechtstreeks geld. De kunstverzamelaar krijgt een mooi kunstwerk. En over 1 ding waren we het wel eens. Op het moment dat je met het werk de gallerie uit loopt, moet je ervan uit gaan dat het 50% minder waard is geworden.
Maar daarom blijft het wel leuk!

Als laatste nog een plaatje:
Via de site www.welikeart.nl kwam ik er achter dat het AMC een kleine foto van Carla van de Puttelaar verkoopt, zij is toevallig de kunstenaar waar ik mijn grootste KKL voor heb lopen voor een zeer grote foto. Die kon ik niet laten liggen.

Na wat digitale omzwervingen heb ik toch mijn blog weer opgepakt.

Snel wat nieuws: mijn mobieltje met camera is gejat dus ff geen foto's van de werkjes van Tinkebell.
Rosalie Ravensteijn heeft haar experimenten afgesloten en het boek is nu een compleet boek.

Ik heb een interview gegeven aan youngcollectors.nl. Dus de liefhebbers kunnen daar mijn echte naam zien. 't Zal nog wel een weekje duren voordat het op de site staat. a.s zaterdag hebben ze een symposium.

Ik heb van Rosalie Ravensteijn n.a.v de eindexamententoonstelling van de Gerrit Rietveld academie 2 werken gekocht.

Eén hangt er nu op in mijn woonkamer. De ander is terug naar Rosalie.
Het werk ziet er zo uit:

Het opmerkelijkste van dit boek is, is dat de kaft van glas is. Dat is de charme van het boek. (er staan geen lettrers in) maar blijkt ook de kwetsbaarheid. De rug van het boek liet los.

Zij is nu "... wat proefjes aan het doen met verschillende lijm soorten..."

Het grappige is dat zij als eerste met een echt contract op de proppen kwam bij de verkoop. Ze had dat van de site kunstenaarsenco had geplukt. waar onder andere in stond dat bij probelem net het kunstwerk ik bij de kunstenaar aan kon kloppen.

constructiefouten en/of verborgen gebreken die optreden binnen 1 jaar na levering van het

Tinkebell alweer

Tinkebell had tot 28 november een overzichtstentoonstelling bij Torch met de omslachtige titel: Looove TINKEBELL, Etwas Spass für den neuen TORCHmeister.
De oude "Torchmeisetr"Adriaan van der have is een half jaar geleden overleden enu heeft de nieuwe Torchmeister zijn zoon Mo de galerie overgenomen. Op de uitnodiging staat een vrouw met lang blond haar in flirtende positie. Dat blijkt de vriendin van Mo te zijn, maar dan met blonde pruik want eigenlijk heeft ze halflang bruin haar.
de overzichtstentoonstelling toonde werk van de afgelopen jaren. Er werden processen-verbaal getoond van de hamsters die Tinkebell ooit had laten rondlopen in plastic ballen. De beruchte Pinkeltje tas was aanwezig. Maar ook de overblijfselen van de kat, keurig in een roze -welke andere kleur- koffertje. Maar ook de hond in blokjes en een opgezet veulentje en ook Popple mocht niet ontbreken.

Al dit werk was ruim 3000 euro en dat vond ik iets te veel: al vind ik de blokjeshond nog steeds heel leuk.
Inderdaad een mooi overzicht.

Als nieuw werk had ze SM-foto's nageschilderd -18-jarige (dus volwassen!) meisjes die met een stok op hun kot geslagen worden- en daar vervolgens bloempjes, vogeltjes of vlindertjes op geborduurd.
Dit werk had twee grote voordelen: het was klein van stuk en tamelijk goedkoop.
Ik heb er twee gekocht. Een plaatje heb ik nog niet maar als ik de werken in huis heb zal ik er een foto van maken en op deze site zetten. Al loop ik dan de kans dat deze blog 18+ wordt, maar dat zien we dan wel weer.

Paris photo

Afgelopen vrijdag de 20e was Parijs mijn doel.
Valkbij het Louvre werd Paris Photo gehouden.
Dit zou de leidende fotobeurs in Europa moeten zijn. Eerlijk gezegd viel de beurs wat tegen. Maar dat had een goede reden. Het blijkt dat Torch (oa Danielle Kwaaitaal, Ellen Kooij), Flatland (Erwin Olaf, Carla van de Puttelaar) en Motive (Martine Stig, Viviane Sassen) op een dermate hoog niveau staan qua fotografie dat de rest van de wereld er niet boven uit steekt.
Ik was het niveau van fotografie dus gewoon gewend en als je dan iets beters verwacht valt het tegen.
dDarbij verzamel ik kunst waarvan fotografie een groot deel uitmaak. Op Paris Photo zijn ook foto's van de Nasa te zien. Dat is mooi voor de fotografie maar geen kunst.

Wat wel leuk was, was de hoeveelheid fotografie. Echt alles en iedereen was er. Ik kwam ogen tekort door de hoeveelheid. Om een uur of 19 ben ik weg gegaan. Ik had genoeg fotografie gezien.
Om het voor mezelf nog moeilijk te malen ben ik daarna ook een paar uur naar het nabijgelegen Louvre geweest.
Dan blijkt Paris Photo groot, maar het Louvre is gewoon te groot.
Uiteraard ff de Mona Lisa gezien, de Rubenszaal en nog meer plattelanden kunst. Zoals een zelfprotret van Duerer en een Erasmus van Holbein, toch schilderijen van bijna 500 jaar oud.

Becoming blue

Ik heb werk van een 50-tal kunstenaars en probeer aanwezig te zijn als 1 van hun een expositie heeft.

Anouk Kruithof had al exposities gehad in Berlijn (waar ze een residency had) en dat vond ik te ver. Nu is er sinds een paar weken een tentoonstelling in Sittard in museum het Domein. Niet bepaald naast de deur, maar ik besloot het te combineren met een bezoek aan het Bonnefantenmuseum in Maatricht.
Het Bonnefantenmuseum heeft een mooi ruim gebouw een mooie collectie, maar niet echt een bijzondere tentoonstelling. Eerlijk gezegd niks noemenswaardigs voor de meeste mensen. Als ex-Eindhovenaar vond ik het wel leuk dat ik een grote zaal zag gewijd aan René Daniels. Het pand is ook mooi, de koffie lekker, zomndag kan je goed parkeren, maar ik werd niet echt warm van de huidige tentoonstellingen.

Van het Bonnefanten ging ik naar Sittard op zoek naar Het Domein. Ik had de pech dat in het centrum van Sittrad een kermis en bierfeesten werden gehouden waardoor het 20 minuten kostte om mijn auto te parkeren en 10 minuten om het museum te vinden. (Ik kon na het museum bezoek wel eenvoudig aan een lekkere hamburger komen)

Museum het Domein is een lastig te definiëren klein museum. Ze hadden 4 tentoonstellingen: de eerste gaat over de historue van de mens van Mammoetjagers tot de huidige mens. (dit lijkt de reguliere opstelling) Daarnaast was er nog een tentoonstelling over de invloed van het katholicisme in de jaren 50 en 60 in Limburg en de veranderingen daarin.
Daarnaast twee tentoonstellingen over actuele kunst. een grote van Anne-Marie Schneider waar ik kop nog kont aan kon ontdekken. Veel te vaag voor mijn smaak.

Uiteindelijk was daar ook de tentoonstelling Becoming Blue van Anouk Kruithof. de tentoonstelling is in een aparte ruimte. Aan het begin staat een stapel boeken waarbij de boeken met dezelfde kleur papier bij elkaar liggen waardoor ze een kleurenpallet vormen. (Volgens de beschrijving van het musuem zijn het 4000 boeken, maar kunsthistorici zijn wel vaker slecht in rekenen. Het zijn er ongeveer 2300. )
Daarnaast staat de video installatie waar eenzelfde stapel boeken in een loop wordt omgetrokken (ik meende touwtjes te zien) en vanzelf weer wordt opgebouwd. (Dit zijn waarschijnlijk wel 4000 boeken.) Na dit voorafje komt het hart van de tentoonstelling dat bestaat uit een 14 tal foto’s. Drie foto’s van een zolderachtige blauwe ruimte en 11 “portretten” . Portretten staat tussen aanhalingstekens omdat het enige dat aan portretten refereert is da eet mens wordt afgebeeld ongeveer vanaf het middel tot de kruin.

Anouk Kruithof heeft niet geprobeerd om een beeld van de persoon neer te zetten. Ze heeft geprobeerd verwarring te stichten. Dat heeftze op twee manieren gedaan. De ene manier is door haar modellen zodanig te pesten dat deze niet weten waar ze het zoeken moeten. Het is niet geheel duidelijk wat ze heeft gedaan met haar modellen, maar als je goed kijkt is op een van de foto’s een extra hand te zien die een veiligheidsspeld vast houdt, een open veiligheidsspeld.

Anouk staat ergens herkenbaar op de foto. Ze schuilt constant achter haar modellen en doet er van alles aan om die zich onbehaaglijk te doen voelen. Haar modellen zitten er door haar gedrag niet even rustig bij. Ze hebben hun ogen vaak gesloten, soms half-open en heel soms helemaal open. Geen enkel model zit er relaxed bij. Sommige modellen hebben hun armen zelfs in een vreemde houding. Geen wonder als je weet dat Anouk klaar staat met een veiligheidspeld en wie weet niet wat meer. De andere overeenkomst tussem de modellen is de kleding. Ze dragen allen blauw wat mee helpt aan het sterke visuele effect.

Want naast de verwarrimg die het bij de modellen veroorzaakt, veroorzaakt de tentoonsteling verwarring bij de toeschouwers. De grote foto’s van de vreemde protretten in een vrij kleine ruimte geeft iets unheimisch. Alleen de foto’s van de blauwe zolder geven nog iets rust, en houden door wederom de blauwe kleur een eenheid in het geheel.

Een erg sterke expositie in een klein museumpje.

Sinds 1 september studeer ik deeltijd kunstgeschiedenis aan de UvA.
Dit kost tijd, zelfs meer tijd dan ik had voorzien.

Dit is goed nieuws voor deze blog. I plaats van het updaten van mijn engelstalige blog, zal ik alleen deze bijhouden.
Ik zal nog wel oude posts vertalen die alleen nog maar op mijn engelstalige blog staan.

Eindexamen tentoonstelling in Utrecht

Afgelopen week ben ik naar dire eindexamen exposities geweest. Als eerste ben ik nar de tentoonstelling van de HKU in mijn eigen stadje Utrecht. Deze was verdeeld tussen twee gebouwen op enkele kiloneters van elkaar vandaan. de eesret dag had ik tijd te over om te kijken en met de studenten te spreken.
Een eindexamententoonstelling duurt gewoonlijk zo'n 4 dagen en de student-kunstenaars lopen in de buurt en zijn graag bereid om over hun kunst te praten. De eerste dag heb ik met enkele fotografie en illustratie afstudeerders geprat. Twee van hen staken er volgens mij bovenuit,
Natascha Boel heeft haar afstudeer werk gemakt rond "intensive parenting" (ze heeft twee kinderen ) Ze maakt mooie tekeningen van kinderen. Je kan ze zien op haar website hier. (Klik op de onderste deel van haar koffer om haar eindexamenproject te zien.
In de sectie fotografie maakte een student haar project over een minder soft onderwerp.Ze fotografeerde machines om dieren te slachten. Verg schone smetteloze stalen machines die zo uit de Terminator films lijken te zijn gehaald.Je kan de foto's hier zien.

Omdat ik nog niks heb gekocht van afstudeerderd dit jaar en ik gewoonte getrouw allen mijn eigen gekocht werk laat zien laat ik gier twee foto;s zien van Martine Derks. Ik heb ze gekocht via de veilingsite photoq.nl Ze is afgestudeerd in 2008 aan de Rietveld Academy.

Voor het Naarden fotofestival. heeft ze een installatie gemaakt Dit festival is wereld beroemd in Nederland Je kan de installatie zien op haar site.

In het ACF te Amsterdam zal ze een volgende tentoonstelling hebben.

Tinkebell alweer

Ik las net dat het boek van Tinkebell is uitverkocht.
Op internet (marktplaats) wordt het verkocht voor 60 euro. de oorspronkelijke prijs was 25 euro.

In een vorige post schrreef ik dat ik een exemplaar had gekocht. Eigenlijk heb ik vier exemplaren geocht. misschien verkoop ik er 1 om mijn kosten te dekken, ik weet het nog niet. Eén exemplaar heb ik weggeven aan mijn kunstvereniging "Kunstliefde". Deze is verkocht of geveild op 20 juni. Kijk hier voor meer details.

Ik weet nog niet wat ik met overige exemplaren ga doen. Eén houd ik er en waarschijnlijk geef ik de rest weg.

My First art collection Foam

Most readers know that I'm the student in an art collector's course.
This Saturday we went to FOAM (Photography Museum Amsterdam).

In there Willem Diepraam, a well-known Photographer, photo critic and licensed assessor for photographs showea part of his collection and told us whatever he found useful to know for starting photo collectors.

I remembered and will remember two things from his "speech".
1. The photo market is a buyer's market. Don't rush. There are so many photographs you can always buy good ones. I think this applies to the complete contemporary art world. There is so much art you can choose from you will always find something you like. So don't rush, tomorrow there is art too.

2. Do your homework. He explicitly recommended to "History of Photography" books I cannot remember. I started to collect books about fashion photography. It appears that I like the autonomous works from fashion photographers. So I bought a book with an overview of Duth fashion photography.

I will buy a book from Helmut Newton. He paved the path for many photographers after him.
From one of the I bought two large pictures. These ar from the series "Anonymous"
It shows nude female models in a position like they are sturdy men and with their face covered in such way they represent an action-hero and stay anonymous.

I bought these two pictures from Liselotte Schuppers.
Without Helmut Newton, she couldn't have made what she did. But we can enjoin.

I bought these whith size 120 x 80 cm which make them real impressive.

Hall of Art (Kunsthal)

With my money spent, I need other ways to work on my art collection.
In Rotterdam exits the Kunsthall (Art Hall.) They held there the first day of June two exhibitions for the last day.

One was dedicated to the "Prix de Rome 200 years" the most distinguished award one can get in art in the Netherlands. It used to be a certain amount of money which had to be spent to make a journey to Rome. This started 200 years ago, when the Netherlands were occupied by the French, and the French King from the Netherlands, Lodewijk Napoleon, (a brother form emperor Napoleon) created the award following a French tradition.
Nowadays the award is biannual and the artist can do whatever she likes with it.

Also in the Kunsthal was an exhibition dedicated to the former owner of Torch gallery, who recently died from cancer. He owned the gallery for 25 years. So his artists are a cross section from 25 years contemporary art. He very much liked photography, he was one of the first to bring it into the contemporary art world.

After Rotterdam I went to Amsterdam. The Fotoacademie (Photo Academy) had her graduation exhibition. I went there to scout for new talent. I found many of them. One I wll be certainly following, because I did not understand her work at all.

In eerste instantie ha dik deze kip niet gekocht, maar ik heb de aankoop verwisseld met een andere kippenfoto. Daarom staat deze foto hier ook later dan de vorige twee.

Budget en verzamelen 3

Feit: mijn budget is ongeveer wel uitgegeven.

In een voorgaand bericht stelde ik dat ik bezig was om te selecteren binnen mijn keuzes. Uiteindelijk is me dat gelukt.

1. Carla van de Puttelaar ik heb besloten om een foto van haar te kopen wat ik vrijdag gedaan heb. Het zal heel wat papierwerk kosten om het geheel af te sluiten en ik zal ook de ruimte moeten vrij maken. van 205 x 78 cm. Maar gekocht is gekocht.
2. Liselotte Schuppers. Een maand geleden heb ik haar thuis bezocht en twee foto's geselecteerd. (Superman and Gladiator) Ze deed me een goed aanbod en ik nam het aan. Levering vindt pas plaats in december. eerst ff sparen.
3. Nicky Onderwater: Ik heb haar een e-mail gesturd om de prijs te vragen. Haar prijzen zijn stevig maar redelijk, met korting voor al geprinte werken. Het is moeilijk om te kiezen. Het resultaat; helaas voor dit jaar maar volgend jaar heeft ze een beter kans. Ik heb niet genoeg budget over. .
4.Boukje Janssen: ze heeft een groepstentoonstelling "...Expectations" tijdens ArtAnsterdam met onbekend werk.Niet het werk nar mijn smaak, maar in het vorige bericht zeg ja dat ik een werk had gekocht.
5. Enige andere kunstnar die ik op ArtAmsterdam zou ontmoeten. Ik kwam veel kunstenaars tegen, zag heel veel werken em kocht er een van Jantien Jongsma. Ik zal hierop terug komen wanneer ik ArtAmsterdam bespreek..
6. Janneke Sprenkels: ze zal zijn op de art en design sale van het tac, onbekend voor haar heeft ze een troef in handen. Eén van haar werken is opmijn want list.
Ongelooflijk maar dat werk staat nog styeeds op mijn want list. Ik kocht drie andere goedkopere werken van haar.

7. Marleen v/d Heuvel and Liselotte de Groot waren ook op de arte n design sale in het TAC. Ze hadden geen troven maar hun prijzen warten zo laag dat ik toch 3 werken van marleen en 2 van Liselotte kocht.
8. Andere kunstenaars op de Art & design sale: van een kocht ik werk van Karlijn de Groot, zij en haar zus Liselotte de Groot deelden een stand. Ikkocht 5 foto's van haar.
9. Merel van Beukering was niet op de sale maar ik legde contact met haar en kocht 1 foto van haar een paar dagen geleden.
10. Ik kwam achter een paar meer mogelijkheden om kunst te kopen. Om meer verwarring te vermijden zal ik ze hier niet verder melden. Ik heb ze ook niet gebruikt al waren ze verleidelijk. Misschien later.

Deze waren de originele 10, maar ik vond een paar meer werken om te kopen.
11. I kocht een foto via de veiling van photoq.nl daarnaast heb ik een bod gedan op nog meer twee foto's.
12. I heb twee installaties van Roos van der Heiden gekocht, wat niet de op voorhand de bedoeling was.
13. Amanda Besl is terug op mijn netvlies. Gallerie Aeroplastics deed een slime zet. Ze boden betaling in termijnen aan. Misschien lezen ze deze blog wel.:-)

Ik heb de neiging om de bijzondere en duurder kunst te kopen. Ik heb idd 1,2, 4, 5 gekoht met duur en goed werk. Maar alle met betaling in delen of met uitetekde kevering.
Op het lagere niveau kocht ik werk van onder de 100 euro met een paar uitzondeingen. Dus ik kan me og steeds veroorloven om kunst te verzamelen.
De deelbetalingen zullen een effect heeb op mijn budget van volgend jaar. hetzelfde dat ik vorig jaar dacht en dat is toch goed gekomen.

Aankoop #40 Boukje Janssen

Soms moet het toeval een beetje geholpen worden. Afgelopen vrijdag ging ik naar het atelier van Boukje Janssen om te kijken naar de installatie Ensemble. Ik had hem op haar website gezien en ik was serieus geïnteresseerd om hem te kopen.

helaas was de installatie te kwetsbaar naar mijn smaak. Ik heb een kat ronddwalen in mijn huis die graag met touwtjes speelt en plekjes onderzoekt om te kunnen liggen. Het enige wat ik kon doen was het kopen en onmiddellijk laten opslaan. Ik koop kunst om naar te kijken niet om op te slaan.

Maar naast de installatie had Boukje een schilderij gehangen dat net klaar was. Het had een gelijk thema en zelf een gelijk figuur als "Ensemble".
Gisteren kocht ik het. Aflevering vindt natuurlijk later plaats erg gebruikelijk in de kunstwereld.
Er staat me nog een verrassing te wachten. Het schilderij heeft nog geen naam...
Jawel, zo vers is het.

vertaling bezigt

TINKEBELL. bekijkt de wereld op een andere manier dan de meeste van ons. Ze wil onderzoeken waarom onze maatschappij is zoals die is. Meestal houdt ze zich bezig met ons gedrag tegenover dieren. Waarom is het verboden om katten- en hondenbont de EU in te voeren, maar worden duizenden nertsen in Nederland gefokt.

In mijn blog gebruik haar naar dikwijls om onderscheid te maken tussen waar alleen de makkelijke kunst voor boven de bank wordt getoond Primavera, Eindhoven) en beurzen waar ook meer controversiële kunst wordt getoond. (ArtAmsterdam, ArtRotterdam)

Dat is niet zonder reden in plaats van zich alleen dingen af te vragen doet ze iets. Mogelijk haar meest controversiële project was het doden van haar eigen kat en er daarna een handtasje van te maken.

een andere was het redden van 61 mannelijke kuikens uit de bio-industrie, maar wel met het dreigen ze te versnipperen als de kuikens niet van haar werden gekocht. Ongeveer 10 weden er verkocht.
een derde was het naken van kat/hond (Popple) uit de vacht van een kat een hond. Binnenste buiten werd de hond een kat en andersom.

Voornamelijk vanwege haar eerste actie kreeg ze hatemail. Ongeveer 100.00 hatemails kreeg ze. Wat doet een kunstenaar als TINKEBELL. met 100.000 hatemails?
Ze maakt er een boek van. Samen met Coralie Vogelaar nam ze ongeveer 1000 van de e-mails en begin op het internet te zoeken naar informatie over degenen die de gate-mail hadden gestuurd. Coralie beschreef het als zoeken in "de oksel van het internet"

The result is a 700 page book full of hate mail and pictures and texts from the ones who sent those e-mails which were picked from the Internet.
The question rises whether it's illegal to create a book with copyrighted hate mails, Internet based texts and photo's. Yes it probably is. No one mentioned in the book however tried to get the book out of the market by a court decision.

So you can still buy your own copy. Therefor look here.

And what was my action? I bought the book the first day it was published. I wasn't the only one. They were for sale in the booth at ArtAmsterdam from the Gallery representing her. It was sold out the same day. The following days people kept asking for the book both at the booth but also at the information desk of the fair.

Some remarks afterwards: Her cat she killed was maltreated by the previous owners and was behaving at least strange. Most people would have taken the cat to the vet to have it killed. TINKEBELL. isn't most people.
The male chickens' destination was the shredder before they were "rescued" by TINKEBELL. This happens all the time in the Netherlands.

Aankoop #23 Merel van Beukering

Het komt wel eens voor dat ik volgens plan verzamel. Toeval of puur geluk hebben gewoonlijk de meeste invloed op wat ik koop. Maar deze was anders. an het beging van het jaar heb ik Merel van Beukering op mijn watchlist gezet. Enkele weken geleden heb ik haar benaderd over haar werk. Ze gaf aan wat te koop was en voor hoeveel.

Een ander deel van het plan was om contact te leggen met Nicky Onderwater voor haar foto's. Zij heeft me ook plaatjes gestuurd en een prijsopgave gedaan. Ik vind haar werk goed, maar zal het toch niet kkopen. Om haar werk goed te begrijpen wil ik eigenlijk twee foto's va haar kopen en dat past nu niet in mijn budget. de foto's gaan op mijn want-list. Ik laat har foto's hier niet zien want ik laat gebruikelijk alleen foto's zien die ik gekocht heb. een andere link is hier.

Ik kocht wel een foto van Merel van Beukering. Maar ik heb ook een foto van haar op de wantlist geplaatst voor volgend jaar.

Ik sla ArtAmsterdam even over, maar kom er nog op terug.

In mijn kunstenaarsvereniging te Utrecht (kunstliefde) vindt een tentoonstelling plaats van de "Belofte 4".

Er stond verbazingwekkend werk van Roos van der Heiden. Ze maakt installaties met insecten daarin. De meeste heeft ze "Worst case scenario #." genoemd. eigenlijk had ik nog nooit installaties met insecten er in gezien.

I kocht "Worst case scenario 4" and #5. Na een meeltje van mij, heeft ze beloofd enkele reserveonderdelen in de vorm van dode bijen en dode vliegen te leveren.

Statement van de kunstenaar
Vogels verdorren in achtertuintjes.
De bestuurder zoekt een plaatsje voor zijn auto.
Een kip vraagt zich af waar zijn poot is gebleven.
Hout stapelt zich op voor het huis.

Ik koop een brood en raap de verdorde vogel op.
Ik kijk naar de bestuurder en de lege parkeerplek.
De kip legde zijn laatste ei en ik pak mijn soldeerbout.
Hout ligt in de kruiwagen en hangt straks aan een plafond.

Hoe zou het lot van een duif in een kooi eruit zien wiens baasje weken geleden is overleden?
Waarom zijn er zoveel recreatieplekken en vervelen we ons te pletter?
Ik zou graag een muis met een stukje kauwgum lokken.

Het gene wat ik maak heeft een spoor van gebeurtenissen waar ik me niet de vraag stel naar doel of doelloosheid. In mijn gedachten slenter ik van herinnering naar ervaring naar frustratie naar materialisatie.

Aankoop #19 Anouk Kruithof

Om titels te vermijden als "alweer een andere aankoop" ben ik begonnen om ze te nummeren.
Deze foto is mijn 19e aan koop dit jaar. Ik heb hem gekocht op de veiling website van phtoq.nl.
De kunstenaar is Anouk Kruithof, een ambitieuze en getalenteerde kunstenaar die van residency naar residency gaat. Op ditmoment woont ze in Praag. De foto die ik heb gekocht echter bevindt zich in Berlijn. Daarom zal het een tijdje duren voordat de foto wordt afgeleverd.
Onderaan kan je de foto zien. Hij heet: "There is.." Het is meer een installatie die gefotografeerd is dan een foto op zich. Anouk maakt meestal zowel foto's als installaties.

Alles blijft veranderen:
Visuele sociale wisselwerking in het tijdperk van digitale communicatie.

Onze snelle maatschappij heeft waarschijnlijk een ander tempo nodig om mensen zich met zichzelf en anderen betrokken te laten voelen. Mensen worden vindingrijker wanneer ze worden uitgedaagd en in voor in ongewone situaties terecht komen. Bewust ontworpen interventies in ons dagelijks leven kunnen ons een moment van rust en bezinning opleveren.

Wat nu gebeurt in onze Design wereld is dat aan de ene kant het zakelijk leven wordt blootgesteld aan kunst en dat andere kant kunst wordt gecommercialiseerd. Dit creëert nieuwe situaties, interpretaties en interfaces. Ik heb er voor gekozen om deze gelegenheid te gebruiken om vormen van sociale betrokkenheid te ontwerpen.Ik ben niet in staat om mensen te veranderen noch gedrag te veranderen. Ik kan echter wel ruimte creëren en ik kan oefeningen creëren die leermomenten geleiden, zelfreflectie stimuleren en bewustwording activeren. Dit alles, hoop ik, zal positief gedrag en zelfbeschikking bij het individu naar boven brengen.

Tijden zoals nu, wanneer een wereldwijde economische crisis plotsklaps opdook, geven ons den mogelijkheid om een onze ogen te openen en te bezien wat er echt is: het is een kans om te hervormen in plaats van gehaast proberen om de crisis te bezweren volgens de oude patronen. Er is een reden waarom zaken opeen hopen- het is tijd voor verandering.

etnische kunst en Leisje Reijskens

Vertaling staat voor vrijdagavond op het programma.

My collector's class (MFAC) went a week ago into the old part of Amsterdam "De Jordaan". In that neighbourhood are dozens of galleries. Hidden behind dirty windows and a closed door is Gallery "native art". we were there to try to broaden our horizon in art. The gallery is loaded with hundreds to thousands pieces of ethnic art. They mostly come from Africa and Indonesia. As in all art works also in ethnic art the focus is on what is considered important. Felix de Rooy broke it down in three concepts. Rejuvenation often shown as a snake or lizard because these animals can renew there skin. Second: female fertility shown as women with large breasts, bellies, thighs and very clear vagina's. Third: male fertility usually shown as large penises.
We, the students, got the assignment to look for an object we liked most and then try to explain what we liked about it.
In the picture below Rob Aussen (the old man) is holding a ceremonial scepter I liked that object most because of the simple forms and the similarity. Really ethnic art is not my cup of tea.
The man with the cap is Felix de Roy. I am standing in the back wearing a red shirt.

There were also more extreme works of art like the bird/man in the following picture. That is too much ethnic art for me. It was chosen by Anita Frank who took the pictures.

After this we went to Gallery 23, which is in an open clean and spacey location. Completely the opposite. gallery 23 is focused on modern African art. This looked more like western art although the African influences were visible.
For example a chair form Mozambique completely built out of parts of Kalashnikov rifles. After the civil war there was an abundance of these.
An other artist used pieces of enamel form broken down commercial pictures. It somehow looked with a twist. That twist is Africa.

After this visit we had lunch and everyone went his or her way. I went back to the Jordaan to visit some galleries.
There I saw the in the Ververs gallery the exhibition from Liesje Reijskens. The works are orginal and good. But they somehow didn't end up on my want list.But maybe they will later. Liesje is a 24 year old Belgium photographer. She takes pictures from girls her own age and makes surrealistic or fairy tale like photo's.
Below a surrealistic one. Those are the ones I liked most.

dieper in de trechter

In het allereerste bericht van mijn blog schreef ik dat ik wilde uitzoeken waarom ik verzamel. Hoe maak ik mijn verzameling. Hoe wil ik komen van een zootje kunstwerken naar een kunstverzameling. Mijn enorme probleem is dat er zoveel kunst is. Daarom heb ik richtlijnen nodig die mijn keuze beperken.

In een vorig bericht had ik het over mijn abcde lijst:
Alle kunstenaars van wie ik een werk bezit of in wie ik geïnteresseerd ben staan op een van deze lijsten.

A betekent: Ik koop elk jaar
E betekent: Je staat hier hoogstwaarschijnlijk op de lijst omdat ik ooit een werk van je heb gekocht. Het is onwaarschijnlijk dat dit nog eens gebeurt.
Bij de andere lijsten kan je zelf wel wat bedenken.

Wie op welke lijst staat weet alleen ik. De positie van twee kunstenaars zal ik echter prijs geven in dit bericht als je zorgvuldig genoeg leest.
De verdeling van kunstenaars op mijn lijst luidt als volgt:
A: 2 & 0
B: 6 & 1
C: 9 & 0
D:15 & 5 onbeslist 1
E: 7 & 9

Totaal 39 & 15 & 1

Ik heb de lijst eenvoudigweg opgesplitst in vrouwen en mannen. Vrouwen links, mannen rechts. Het is eenvoudig te zien dat ik vrouwelijke kunstenaars prefereer. Waarom gaat mijn voorkeur uit naar vrouwelijke kunstenaars? Dat weet ik niet Dat doet er ook niet toe.

5 minuten geleden heb ik een besluit genomen.

Ik heb besloten om vanaf nu alleen maar vrouwelijke kunstenaars te verzamelen. Dit heeft nauwelijks effect op mijn huidige verzameling en interesselijst. de meesten waren al vrouw. Het zoeken van nieuwe kunstenaars wordt een stuk eenvoudiger. 50% van de kunstenaars kan ik voorbij lopen zonder ze te hoeven herinneren hun website op te zoeken of vragen aan of over te stellen.

In het vorige bericht over mijn tijd om te kiezen stond in categorie 10 4 foto's van een mannelijke kunstenaar. Die staan er nu niet meer.

Ik houd nu nog 1 uitzondering. Matijs van de Kerkhof blijft op mijn interesselijst. Zolang als ik de regels bepaal mag ik ze ook breken als ik daar zin in heb. :-).

De onbesliste kunstenaar is een duo. Ze blijven ook op mijn lijst. Kijk eens naar hun website. Ze maken hun eigen blik op de wereld van vandaag.

Feit: in mei ga ik het restant van mijn budget opmaken.

Ik ben u bezig om te preciseren welke kansen ik wil grijpen.

10. Afgelopen vrijdag heb ik nog meer mogelijkheden gevonden die ik domderdag nog niet kende. Om verwarring te vermijden laat ik deze even zitten.

Ik zal nog heel wat moeten trechteren.. .

Om de puzzel iets interessanter te maken :
elke kunstenaar heb ik het porijsberiek geven van het werk dat ik goed vind. Alle prijzen zijn in euro's. De rangorde is niet geheel random. Met een beetke kennis kan je de code kraken en decijfers met de letters verbinden.

a 2250 tot 4950 (ik wil er één)
b 850 tot 1500 (Ik wil er twee)
c 550 tot 975 (Ik wil er twee)
d schatting 300 tot 4000 (ik wil er minimaal één)
e schatting 200 tot 100000 (ik wil er minimaal één)

g 100 to 200 (schatting)(ik wil er minimaal één
h onbekend normaal onder 100 (ik wil er minimaal één
i schatting 750 (Ik wil er twee)

Totaal is dit ongeveer 16000 euro. (Ik heb de vrijheid genomen om onwaarschijnlijk aankopen te verwijderen om een realistische som te verkrijgen.)

Van dat bedrag kan ik de betaling voor ongeveer 6000 euro uitstellen naar later jaren.(Ik weet dat er iets te regelen valt met galerieën) Dus dan houd ik 10000 euro over voor dit jaar. Mijn resterend budget is ongeveer 3000 euro.

Ik zal dus nog heel wat moeten trechteren.. .

Hoe ga ik kiezen: ten eerste ga ik naar ArtAmsterdan het Tac en de tentoonstelling Expectations. Dan zal ik beslissen.

Ik heb de neiging om meer high end en duurder werk te kopen (bijv. #1,2,4) Maar dat gaat wel ten kostte van vele goedkopere werken.
Niemand weet wat het wordt.

Ik beëindig dit bericht met de eerste foto die ik van Marije Arends kocht in 2005. In het vorige bericht liet ik de drie werken zien die ik als laatste van haar kocht.

Snelle aankoop en levering Marije Arends

De afgelopen weken ben ik druk geweest om te besluiten hoe ik mijn laatste euro's ga uitgeven. De uitdaging voor mij ligt erin dat enerzijds ik ervan houd om op nieuwe werken en kunstenaars te jagen. Aan de andere kant wil ik de kunstenaars nauwlettend blijven volgen die ik al een of meerder jaren verzamel. Dus toen ik op jacht was naar nieuwe werken besloot ik plotsklaps om de werken te kopen die al ruim een jaar op mijn verlanglijstje stonden. Want ik wilde niet dat die werken weer in het gedrang zouden komen. Zondag stuurde ik een meeltje. Afgelopen dinsdag kwam ze foto's brengen. Werkelijk een record. De kunstenaar heet Marije Arends. Iemand met zo'n naam moet en arendsoog hebben tijden s het maken van kunst. Hieronder staan de foto's die ik kocht. Ze zijn onderdeel ven een documentaire serie. Ze heeft familie en vrienden dicht op de huid gezeten en nam foto's vanuit zeer verschillende hoek.

Collecting is choosing. Every budget is limited, so is mine. May is the month I usually spend the most money on art. This has two main reasons. The second is ArtAmsterdam, that is the biggest art fair in the Netherlands. It's mainly Dutch but it has a sturdy international component. Quality is high, some art is within my budget. The last two times I bought art and I never intended too when I went.

The first reason is the art and design sale in the Tac in Eindhoven. That's the place I started to buy art in such quantities I started collecting. Since the first time year it's kept I go and buy. This year won't be different.
Janneke Sprenkels will be there and probably Marleen v/d Heuvel or Matthijs v/d Kerkhof. Merel van Beukering and Liselotte de Groot (both on my watch list) might be there as well.
Tac is short for Temporary Art Centre. It's situated in an old Philips building. (For the Football fans: the Philips stadium, home base for PSV,is right across the street. Philips was founded in Eindhoven.) Tac is meant for creating art. There are dozens of ateliers in the building and a small dozen of multi purpose spaces. Exhibitions parties, workshops and the Art and design sale are held here. Many artists from my buy or watch list will be there so I will leave Eindhoven with a trunk full of art and ann empty wallet.

That's the easy part. There are however artists who are high on my watch list, but I'm sure I won't meet on ArtAmsterdam or in the Tac. So I'm helping faith a little bit. I e-mailed Liselotte Schuppers for a price query on the photography and I will go tomorrow to an exhibition from Liesje Reijskens in Amsterdam. Next to this I received lists from gallery Aeroplastics for Amanda Besl and Shadi Ghadirian.

The problem gets obvious far too many artists and works and not enough budget. To make things worse I've already decided to buy one large work from Carla van de Puttelaar. My biggest buy ever considering size (205 x 78 cm) and price (twice the amount from my second largest buy.) Although I will pay this in 36 months it still creates a gap in my budget.

I alomst forgot the works from Boukje Janssen which came back from New York but are stuck now at customs.

So this month it's decision time.

The least likely to buy this year is the work from Amanda Besl.
She makes paintings on small panels depicting adolescent girls.

Artist's Statement of Amanda Besl:

In my recent work I try to evoke an open-ended fiction while speaking of the documentary quality of photography, the language of fashion photography, the viscosity of oil paint, and the transient nature of memory. My paintings emerge from a cultural feminine perspective, exploring the complexities of an aesthetic that fetishizes youth. The images are a string of metaphors that build series of events. The paintings are small in size in order to allow a more intimate viewing experience and to recall their history as photographic images. They pop from the wall off beveled edges to create a staccato rhythm of frozen suggestive moments. My pieces are cinematic in nature. I link seemingly unrelated sensory images which inform each other as narrative moments. The subject matter balances on the fine line between the mundane and the obscure. To view these paintings is to partake in a visual eavesdropping on the secretive world that engulfs today's girl.

I focus upon metaphors of the transient nature of adolescence. Horses act as a suggestive counterpart in paintings which are mostly devoid of human males. The fetishistic quality of these pocket-sized worlds emphasizes the idea of obsessive crushes. I am interested in heroic transformations of ordinary events which exist both as dark psychological secrets and as adult fairy tales supplanting their predecessors. These paintings are not nostalgic, except as personal nostalgia. They are not apologetic or hedonistic and have any number of possible endings or possibly no ending—just a pause, a breath.

Yesterday I installed my last piece of art I bought at ArtRotterdam. It's very fragile and really 3-d. So I had to find a spot. Where know one comes I don't know about, my cat cannot come, where there is no wind or draught.
So I placed it in my bedroom on eye level.
It consists of two small mirrors in an angle of 90 degrees and in between a transparent sheet with the text from a sermon on it, with as a subject: when does one actually exist.
The object is between two photographs, one from Isolde Woudstra on the left and one from Mery on the right.

Art Brussels 2009

This Friday I went to ArtBrussels. I should have been we but my Mfac co-student was confused by the wrong house number and never reached my house.
Artbrussels is held in the Expo next to the Atomium. It is divided into two halls. I took the backdoor because of the parking lot I'd put my car for the incredible amount of 4 euros. (I expected 10.)

I walked in and the first thing I grabbed was the floor plan. ArtBrussels is large. 172 galleries are represented. (425 wanted in) I think 3 to 4 football matches could take place in this space now dedicated to art. The next thing I did was grabbing a lunch and looking at the plan looking for familiar galleries.

Off course I should go to Ronmandos the gallery I had the invite from. I actually saw their booth just 5 hours later. I started in Hall 3 and had my first good surprise within 15 minutes. Aeroplasctics Contemporary sold paintings from Amanda Besl. Her paintings are on the first picture. They're all small, very realistic made in high detail and all from young women. I own two from her paintings. I bought them at ArtAmsterdam two years ago, my first buy from a gallery.

They had more work, I liked Shadi Ghadirian as well. But I think her fame Will make her very fast too expensive for my taste. Good for her though.
I saw a wonderful video from Antoine Roegier and missed an other one. I strolled from booth to booth saw very nice works from artists who are very well known but I had never known them. Endless my stroll was, after two hours I was just halfway hall 1 and still had one and a half hall left.
My conclusion half way therefore was. ArtAmsterdam and ArtRotterdam may be nice, but this is a different cup of tea. The quality of the art is the same, but the quantity is way larger. Luckily there was also a bar which sold good an cold Belgian beer. In total I visited them twice in my 5,5 hours walking amongst art, to drench my thirst and to rest my feet. I saw some nice works from Marina Abramovic. I thought she just made performances jeopardizing her own life. But she also makes pictures from Chinese children sleeping with M-16's.

Guided tours were held twice a day, and I joined one of the. Together with just two other people. While being guided I found out that I thought I'd covered now three quearters of the exhibition. Bu it really makes a difference which way you go through an aisle. The aisles I'd covered form left to right we now went through from right to left and while walking that way I saw completely different art.
So I'd missed a lot.
The tour was very nice. It mentioned the sculpture from picture two below. Is seems to abstract but if you look well enough a face can be seen.

After the tour I scooted through the last aisles, vsited RonMandos, and started to collect the prices and other information I wanted from the artists I really liked an were probably within my budget. The Austrian artist Marc Aschenbrenner shown by gallery Olaf Stueber (Berlin) , is one of them.
I collected my data, didn't buy a thing and went home. Dead tired but content after a 5,5 hour walk between international works of art I headed for my car.

As a single and more living inside my head than outside it is often a lonely job being an art collector. My colleagues and friends are at least bewildered when they find out I pay as much as an inclusive two-week Holiday to Turkey for a few works of art I bought at ArtRotterdam and considered cheap.

I don;t have the budget to go with the crowd when buying, so I chase my own taste. I have no spouse or children who are dependent on me. So all the money I have left I can put in my art-budget and no one complains about it.

So I do have some urge to connect with fellow collectors who understand my problems like will I buy three photographs from Marije Arends or one from Hellen van Meene?

As an IT-consultant, to keep the headhunters away I will not specify my specialty, I have a profile on linkedin. I'm already connected to three different art groups.
The problem is however is that those artgroups are spammed by professionals in the art scene who want to sell their services, their own art work, or the art work they represent.

Somehow I was delighted when I was made aware of www.independent-collectors.com A networking site for collectors only. It's Germany based so most collectors are European. And for me an important German area as the Ruhr area is about a two hour drive by car. So very close.

The site is just starting so to start up they asked Tommi Brem to start a blog about starting collecting art. So he did here.
He is a really new not in collecting, he collected SF-books and records before this, but he is in art.

Although he is confronted with the same problems as I am. Many impressions, small budget, what to buy, why to buy. There also huge differences. He has a wife, who must be devoted to him and sometimes in complete denial of his actions. (She picked up a piece of art at German customs containing a drawing with a swastika, which is illegal in Germany.) So he cannot exceed his budget without getting up in a row with his wife. I can decide to enlarge my budget whenever I feel like it.
The other one and more important one is that I started to paddle in the sea of art by buying a painting somewhere in 1999 at a local second hand bookshop in Middelburg.
A picture of it, I show in this post. He really plunged in the deep. He has been to Art Basel with side shows and Art Basel Miami, these are fairs I've never been to.
He decided to collect. I somehow found out two years ago that I was collecting art when I had been buying for 8 years and collecting for two years.

The similarities are, we both blog and both collect and enjoy it.

Tomorrow I will go to my first foreign ArtFair. Art Brussels is just abroad, someone from my MFAC students will join me to the always surprising Belgians. Let's see what happens.

next purchase or dialogue

The same day I went to AFH (see previous post) I had to go on in a high pace to Amsterdam. (where else) I'd got an invite from Isolde,(no Tristan around)who made an exhibit together with nine other artists who took a course as starting curator. As a curator you must be able to make exhibitions so they created this trial as their course-project. As artists they had plenty of art available. So they could concentrate on the exhibit itself.
All these artists are young, not long time away from the academy and eager to show their own taste of creation. The result was a very pioneering, hard to grasp, out-of the box art. The exhibition was not located, like AFH, in a hallway in an industrial zone kilometers far from the city centre. It was next to heart of the city centre of Amsterdam in a house which the inhabitant had transformed into an exhibition space. It couldn't be further from AFH metaphorically speaking.
The result I bought a picture. I had only a low resolution jpeg, but I replaced it by a better one. In the picture you see a frame. I actually bought the picture framed in the same frame which is in the picture. It shows that the picture isn't disconnected from the real life. The frame in the real world frames the picture and within the picture the same frame frames a piece of the picture. This inner outer world connection is enhanced by the socket which is just in the upper right corner of the picture. Off course this socket is there on purpose. It's easier to leave the socket out of the view than to show the socket in that precise corner. This creates a down-to-eart approach: Isolde created a picture from a woman lying in a pink dress under a frame flat on the ground, but keep in my mind this picture was taken in a place where sometimes people need a light or to hoover so there is also a socket in the wall.

Art Antiques Fair Den Bosch

This Sunday I went to a fair I'd never gone before Art and Antiques Fair Den Bosch.

My conclusion: It wasn't a complete waste of time.

That is not a very positive remark. But I am not very positive. Art and Antiques Fair Den Bosch(in short AFH) is a pale shadow of a fair like Primavera. AFH is an old fair established in 1967 but its glance is fading. The antiques are now being replaced by contemporary art to attract younger visitors. As a young visitor (really 36 and still young) I skipped all Antiques, glanced a few times over the modern art and had a thorough look at the contemporary art. I actually saw four booths with nice art. None of them however had any pioneering art. No Tinkerbel here, this was art for the living room to replace the reproduction from Monet above the couch. Not boring, but not shocking either. As for the children's room of waiting room. Nice to look it, but in no way confronting or with a second layer. To see what I mean a nice picture from Willy Rojas. Very nice for a children's room who will enjoy it. But it cannot keep my mind busy for more than 10 seconds.

About a week ago I blogged that I bought a painting from Irina Babiouk. This painting was delivered this Thursday by courier. Happily I unpacked it. For the major part it was as I expected.
However I saw one minute black streak of paint. Really minute, but it was an eye catcher and distracted me from the essence of the painting itself. No sulking for me however I sent an e-mail to Irina and explained the problem. A day later she offered to correct the painting and yesterday she did. So within two days the problem was over. Below you see twice the painting. One time with and one time without the black streak.

So what does a collector do on a quiet Wednesday. Due to circumstances I was early away from work. So I went to the inner city of Utrecht.
At first I bought the book Puur (pure) from Mery dedicated to her project of photographing Teenage mothers.
Next I bought some white gloves to handle my art more cautiously. Some works form Boukje Janssen I recently bought, require more subtlety on handling.
After that I went to Flatland gallery to see their exhibition. It was a nice exhibition in a very nice building. I'd actually never been to that gallery. They focus on photography which I like but their aim is a little bit too high for my budget. After that I went to a second hand bookshop and bought an old catalogue from Sotheby's "photographs from the Bert Hartkamp collection" It gives a nice overview for the contemporary photography.
Finally I got home and found a letter from gallery Smarius. They sent me a special guest badge for the fair Art Amsterdam, so I can enter the preview and enter during this fair whenever I like for free.

House keeping or After Sales 2

So Easter is almost over. I used some time to add labels, probably too many, to all my posts. To the right you can see them all and search posts which have the label.

Next to housekeeping of my blog I did some house keeping of my works of art too. I hung two works of Boukje Janssen. These are some out of the ordinary. So I couldn't use my usual arrangements. One is a necklace with the text "is there something we should know" in mirror image. It is very light and very vulnerable. It needs three pins to hang it on the wall. So I put it on a place out of the way of draught. And a place I could hammer three pins in the wall. One letter the "u" turned 90 degrees so I had to keep it in place by a broken off pin.

The other one is mostly black velvet with black pins pointing outwards. It's almost impossible to see the pins because of the same color. So this one I had to put on a quiet spot where now one accidentally could be hurt. After all art belongs on eye height. And eyes and pins don't mix together. I put it in place by hammering 8 black pins around it. So now a a work of art mainly consisting of black velvet and black pins is kept in place by black pins.

The battery from my mobile phone is empty so I cannot take pictures. They will come later.

Lost and found

In a previous post I was looking for the creator of a work of art from which I knew the first name. "Cathalijne"
That one was identified by Sanneke as a work from Cathalijne van Gent, which she confirmed.

Now it is more difficult. These works below I know nothing from except that I bought them on kunstveilingazie.nl. This was an online benefit auction for aiding the victims from the tsunami that struck the Asian coast in 2005.

Who recognises these? The cat is on canvas and about a square meter. The woman is about 40 x 50 centimeters.

Stop making sense

Stop making sense is the title of an exhibition I got an invite for. The exhibition is just a weekend in place. And is of course in Amsterdam. I got the invite because I am in contact with one of the artists. Isolde Woudstra is a fashion photographer with autonomous traits or the other way around: an autonomous photographer with fashion traits. (As long as the clothes do not consist of leather or fur.)

After sales

I have said earlier on this blog that most artists don't think commercially. So if anything happens that contradicts this believe I blog it.

Like I said earlier I bought 4 works from Boukje Janssen. I tried to hang one of them on my wall. But I missed the means to hang it from.
I had seen it hanging in Rotterdam and I saw no traces that anything was removed from the back. So I wrote an e-mail. Which said in short "Help I'm confused." Boukje replied that black pins had kept it in place and she offered to send some.

Below you see the intermediate results.

Nice feature. These same pins are also in the piece of art I want to hang on my wall. However in this case some are pointing out... Ouch!

PS I added Lilith and Liesje Reyskens to my watch list and removed Hellen van Meene like I feared I would.

Hear, hear... latest purchase

Like I wrote in my previous post. Last week I purchased a small work of art.
This time I didn't buy it through a benefit auction. I bought it at a gallery. The gallery Artolive is physically based in the culture park "Westergasfabriek" in Amsterdam. However that is not really important. Its virtual base is far more important. It's an online gallery with over 60,000 pieces of art. I often use it as a kind of database. I estimate that about 30 percent from the less known Dutch artists can be found on Artolive. And sometimes I find pretty things. Although pretty is in this case not the right adjective. Eerie is more in place.
I bought this work from Irina Babiouk. She was born in Russia. Nowadays she lives in the Netherlands. She graduated this year from art school. (St. Joost)

The work is called "Ear" and this is her description:
"All of the human body are energy nodes. A paranormal woman once told me that the ear is comparable to the foetus. As vulnerable and as source... puncture this with piercings and the energy nodes are wounded which are vital for the foetus."

Amsterdam

For 15 years I've been living in Eindhoven. There goes the proverb "The only good thing in Amsterdam is the train back to Eindhoven." Nowadays I live in Utrecht, which is 80 kilometers closer to Amsterdam. Utrecht even looks like Amsterdam. An overcrowded city center. Parking problems combined with huge parking costs. Entering the city center by car without a TomTom or ten years experience is impossible. On the positive side. Because of the crowd everything is always happening. There are beautiful canals. The ancient city center has lovely buildings. By foot or bike you can reach any destination within 10 minutes.
The main difference between Utrecht and Amsterdan is, that Amsterdam is about three times as large. Both city center and city.

I had a meeting in Amsterdam for "My first art collection" We discussed how a gallery owner makes his prices and how taxes mingle with art. The latter one was discussed with Sigrid Hemels lecturer at Leiden University. She wrote a Dutch book for non-tax lawyers about that subject.

After the meeting being in Amsterdam I decided to go to the Melkweg for the exposition Pure from Mery I previously wrote about.
The exposition was overwhelming. I usually don't see many pregnant women. I never see them nude and I never ever saw 75 together in one building. Most amazing was that Mery was capable of showing each woman as an individual. All pictures were really different. I am happy to own two of these pictures.
A print 140 x 90 cm is 1000 euros one size smaller is 650 euros and 40 x 55 cm is just 250 euros.

Walking from the gallery "Serieuze zaken" to the Melkweg I encountered about 4 galleries which I all entered and where I studied the works of art.

After that I went to gallery RonMandos at the Prinsengracht. I encountered again about 4 galleries which I entered and where I studied the art.
At Ronmandos I was amazed about the huge gallery, which was just exhibiting two artists. I had a nice chat with the two employees and the quality was pretty high although not my collector's taste.

Now it was rather late so I just visited two unplanned galleries and went to "Eduard Planting fine art photography"
I saw beautiful pictures there and two very scary pictures. Loretta Lux showed these two.
Have a close watch to see WHY they're so scary.

Then I finally got lost towards Koch en Bosch That gallery I bought my works form Marjo van den Boomen. (having a baby so not on the art mood right now) My remarks about this exposition won't do it justice. The artist "mijn schatje" is a girl and she is mainly bought by girls.
Have a look at the picture. In an edition of 70 it is just 95 euros, Which I consider a bargain. All other works are under 1000 euros as well. If you anywhere like this get your work of art.

I really have to admit. Amsterdam is amazing with regard to the amount and quality of galleries. Probably half of all the galleries in the Netherlands are in Amsterdam. I just walked through a part of Amsterdam and saw dozens of interesting galleries.
Content I took the train back to Utrecht. Not the only good thing but still the best.

PS I bought a work of art yesterday night and I am really content about it.

In a previous post I wrote about my two lists of artists. The list with artists I own works from and the watch list. The latter consist of artists I think are interesting to buy work from, but I haven't done so. You can find those lists at the right hand side of my blog.
A few days ago I added a third list, the alas list. These are artists I like but won't buy work from. There are plenty of reasons I don't put them on my watch list. The main reason is I want to keep my watch list small. Because the supply of art is huge I can maintain a high standard. Because I have a third list I won't "lose" the artist but can still reconsider her position. The price is an important factor in my considerations. I just decided to put Erwin Olaf on my alas list. He was on my watch list, although in group E. I like his work, but he is way too expensive. I'm afraid Hellen van Meene and Carla van de Puttelaar will leave the same way. Remarkable is that they all are represented (or in stock) by the Utrecht-based Flatland gallery. For me the Gallery out priced itself. However there are many collector with much deeper pockets than mine. So Flatland won't need my purchases. While writing this I realised one of my guiding principles. Because I like collecting and buying art I don't want to spend my yearly budget for a few works. I want to buy many works and the only way to collect this way is by buying many cheaper works.
This finally takes me to my fifth list. (My fourth list is still work in progress)
On this list I put the specific works of art I want to buy. This is less intuitive way of buying art then I'm used to, but this is the only way to more or less structure my collecting. After 36 year I got to know myself. I like too many thins so must force myself to enforce my own collecting policy.
There are 6 works of art on my want list. Three of them are form Marije Arends (Arends means "from the eagle")I just own now one picture from her, which shows in this post.

Most of my art I bought on intuition. But I was soon aware that buying art from the same artists added value to my collection. (Although I wasn't aware I was collecting) That's why I sometimes bought works, which I would never have bought if they were single. The body of works of an artist sometimes demands to buy it too. This work is from Janneke Sprenkels from whom I own a lot of works. I wouldn't have bought it If wasn't part of the body of works. But now I own and sometimes display it. I've started to appreciate it more and more. Have a look for yourself and you could perhaps compare it with "feeling blue"

Catalogue (wip 2)

I'm still trying to catalogue all my works of art. Before I collected art, I bought irregular but frequently. I jotted nothing down about the works I bought and that's a pity because now I have lots of difficulties to try to find out whom I bought work from and if I know from whom, who she is.

I've got two examples. The first one is Han Mol. I own a print of him. These prints were made to raise money for TAC (Temporary Art Centre)in Eindhoven. The print is clearly signed so I know his name. But that's really all I know. Googling had no real effect. So I'm gonna ask some people. Maybe they still have information.

In the Tac I really started to collect (at first without being aware of this) and that is where I bought this work (see picture) It's a picture in a small wooden box (15cm x 15cm) and signed "Cathalijne" That's all I know....
It can be worse, next week I'll show some works from someone I don't have a clue who he is.

In law school one learns that there is a huge difference between sale and delivery. In the art world it happens all the time. It seldom happens that the moment I buy a work, I instantly can take it away.

This Friday and Saturday I got 6 works delivered. Friday morning I went to the atelier from Boukje Janssen. I had a nice chat saw some interesting work and collected 4 works of art I had bought earlier during ArtRotterdam.

I have two pictures which do some justice to the works.

My second Art collection

Collecting art should be more than buying a bunch of works of art.

The question is: what defines "more" ?

Of course I do have my own taste in art. And all the works I collected are a reflection of my taste. But I want my collection to be more than an bunch of works of art representng my taste. I want my collection to represent the time I live in. Better the development in art of the time I live in.

That's why I am collecting in two fields of art: Collecting artists and collecting art.

I've been trying to find out which artists I'm collecting. So I made a list. Every artist I have a work of art from and every artist I'm interested in is on that list. There are now 54 names on that list.
Within the list I made groups. Group A to group E. I'm more likely to buy art from someone in teh A-group than the E- group.

To get high on the list the artist must make: likable, available and affordable work.
There are 42 artists in my collection: divided as:
A: 2, B: 4, C: 6, D: 15, E: 15

There are 12 artists on my watch list: divided as:
A; 0, B: 3, C:1, D: 7, E, 1.

So what do A to E stand for. I'm actually not sure. The outer groups A and E are the easiest to distinguish how I'm going to act towards them. From these two groups I've been working to the other groups.

Group A: I really like your work and think you have great potential. I will buy art from you at least every year.
Group B: I'm closely watching you, if possible I buy art from you.
Group C: I like your work but luck or good marketing must help to buy art from you.
Group D: I like your work, I try to watch you , but don't expect anything.
Group E: You're on my list most probably because I once bought a piece of at from you. But it's unlikely it will happen again.

Marijan Gluhak is in my E-group. I own several pictures from him. One is shown at the right. I still like his pictures. But his availability is low. I met him in Dubrovnik (Croatia) on my holiday and that was probably the last time I have ever seen him.

Please be aware these groups are the means to structure my thoughts about artists. I first liked or bought the artist. Later on I made the groups and connected my actions to them.

There is another thing: I do not limit my buying to these artists, if I really like a work of art. I buy it and will add artist 55 to my list.
The huge amount of artists in my D and E-group shows that has happened many times in the last years.

That's why I seem to have two art collections. My first following the artists and my second following my guts.

Spring is in the air

There are three kind of artists. One kind is bad in marketing the second kind is even worse.

I once sent a message to an artist and her gallery that I was interested in purchasing her work. The gallery answered my e-mail late but within a few days. The artist answered just after a month by asking if her gallery had allready answered my query. I bought two of her pictures I get stll invites from the Gallery, but never heard of the artist again.

Most Artists I buy work from are without gallery. So you would expect they would try to contact me once in a while. Some of them now contact me when the're having an exposition like Matijs van de Kerkhof.

Last Friday I received an exception.
Marleen van de Heuvel sent me this Spring-card.
Why? I don't know, I don't care. It might have been marketing, it might have been an art project, it might have been a spontaneous act. I liked it.

What happened is that I answered her card and so next time I see her the chance of ignoring her booth will be much less likely.

The hint I got from Marleen was to go to the Spring is in the air market in Amsterdam. I reckon she will be there too.

The lesson learned for collectors is: artists make art. Marketing or sales are unknown territories to them. Don't expect them to call you, call or e-mail them!

The "cacaofabriek" isn't funded any more by the province. And the city council doesn't provide any means too. So the people from the cacaofabriek held an auction to raise money for their exhibition space.

The artist who once exhibited were asked to (partially) donate a piece of art. And the result was remarkable good. I am low on budget so I could afford just two bids.

The result of the auction was that 48 lots were sold and I bought 2 of them. While the auction was in progress, I was having dinner in Maastricht after trips to Tefaf and Marres. I'd made a written bid and just made it within my limit.

The lots are both drawings from "Petri Barten" I actually don't have a picture from them but I will provide it as soon as possible in this post.

Tefaf

The European Fine Art Fair is by lengths, the largest art fair in the Netherlands. I was there Saturday with my group from My First Art Collection (MFAC). Tefaf is situated in Maastricht, which is by far the most European city in the Netherlands because it's very close to our neighbours Belgium and Germany and very far from most of the Netherlands. The Maastricht Treaty is also well known adding an other European feature to this city.

When you're at Tefaf. You can see the most expensive painting for sale in the Netherlands, a 26 milion euro Van Gogh. You're standing in a space about as large as ArtRotterdam and ArtAmsterdam combined. You have paid 55 euro's for a ticket which is 3 times the price for the ticket of ArtAmsterdam and probably the catalogue which is 4 times as expensie as ArtAmsterdam's , but also 8 times as heavy.

The variety of art is massive. Jewellery, pottery, furniture, paintings through the last 4 ages but also ancient weaponry and suits of armour.

My taste is more the contemporary art. And with a football field to choose from I had more than enough to watch. Very remarkable was this a life-size sculpture by Duane Hanson It looked very scarily real. It was bought by the Scheringa museum. Not all the banks seem to bothered by the credit crisis.

There were also dozens of Fontana's, Richters, Picabia's, Magritte's. The sales of these kind of works of art I usually just read about in books. And now you can go ask for the price. The price you cannot afford.
A member form the Rotterdam of Mfac asked for the price of a painting she was drooling over. The Marlene Dumas was 120.000 euro's. About ten times as much she could afford...

For our group it wasn't buying just watching. But sometimes you don't need to buy art to enjoy it.

Yesterday I got an invite for the opening of the exhibition: Puur Trotse Tienermoeders. (Pure, Proud Teenage Moms.) Exhibited are pictures (photography) from nude teenage moms either high pregnant either with a fresh baby.

Actually I own 2 of those pictures which are presented in th huge size of 140 X 90 cm. They're hanging in my bedroom (whether pictures of baby's and pregnant women are an incentive or a warning in my bedroom I leave to your own imagination)

The exhibition is in the Melkweg in Amsterdam and starts 2nd of April to 3rd of May.

Catalogue (wip 1)

The more and longer I'm collecting the more and more I'm wondering what or who am I collecting.

I thought I was collecting artists. However I seem to be collecting a plethora of different works and styles. I really thought I was trying to collect in depth. But that doesn't seem to be true.

Trying to grasp the meaning out of those works I'm starting to catalogue them. First step is to get to know all the names of the artists I've collected so far.
Today I had found 36 people I collected work from. I was really amazed by the huge amount I thought it to be 20 to 25 but there seem to be more than 40.

There are at least 4 more which I haven't identified yet.
I will continue to search and gradually I will start cataloguing the works themselves.
How many works of art I own I don't know but my estimate is 93.

Most artists I have only one work from. Janneke Sprenkels is a huge exception. I own more than 10 works from her.

Yesterday I blogged that I had made a written bid for one lot.
I won the bid !

Including mark-up it just cost me 135 euros while my limit was 180 inlclusive mark- up. The lot consisted of 3 silk-screens from the same artist Hans Vanhorck which also make a fine series.
A nice feature from 2 out of three is that part of the picture is outside the designated area. Not something you would expect from these works found at a regional auction.

Benefit Auctions

About a dozen of works I own did I get by buying them at benefit auctions.

Sometimes I must try to find out about those auctions myself. Sometimes an artist reminds me that his or her work is about to be sold over there.

Matijs van de Kerkhof was the smart one today so tomorrow I'm off to Helmond, to have a look at at the exposition of the art to be auctioned.

While I'm there at an other auction I left a bid at three screensprints. The auction master will process my bid. So maybe I will be looking at art in Helmond and buying art at the same time but 100 kilometres further in Utrecht.

For reasons I will disclose later I instantly decided to buy three works of art.

All are from Sanneke Duijf . Originally these were meant for a competition. However they were not selected as a win.
I liked them and although I knew the works for 8 months, I just bought them a few days ago.

It will take a few more months to deliver because Sanneke mostly lives in Oslo which is rather far from Utrecht.

Really looking at art

Since February I've been attending the course My first art Collection. The course is aimed to help the student create an real art collection.

One part of the Course was last Saturday. We went to the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag (Municipal museum The Hague)
There we were welcomed by the curator contemporary art
Doede Hardeman and Professor Kitty Zijlmans. (lecturing contemporary art)

This day we would enter the depot of the museum. (This seldom happens to non-museum co-workers. ) There we would watch some 19 paintings and photo's, from which had to select five objects in couples.

I couldn't say the depot was awesome, but impressive it was. On the racks were the Mondriaans (largest collection in the world) and many many other works of art. About a football field filled with racks which had art attached to it.

The aim was to be more aware of our norms we had for liking art. We had a homework assignment to describe a work of art and to argument why we liked the work.

Below here I translated my home work to English and made some additions which I was made aware during the course.

"Boom van een kerel” "Men Tree" (2006) by Sanneke Duijf

The work is mostly a painting which has a 3-D addition made of wire. The painting depicts the upper half of man which transfigures at the neck to a leafless tree. In the background there are some other trees. The wire forms the branches of the tree which come forward out of the painting towards the viewer.

In the all paintings four colors are being used, black white, light grey and dark grey. The most part of the painting the forms are sturdy. However details are visible the man's white shirt has got detailed button and collar. The highest and smallest branches form the tree are detailed pictured too.

What really stands out is the sturdy composition. This combined withe the title (which is in Dutch an expression) makes quite clear what the painting want to express. The man tree figure stands big in the middle of painting. The size about 80 x 90 centimeters makes that the figure is as large as in life.

The black and white part, the jacket and the shirt are treated with varnish, that's why these parts shine and make the man part stand out of the tree part. One could also say that the varnished part is just the clothing of the man tree.

The wire comes about 40 centimetres forward and is part of the tree. It will create shadows on the branches making extra branches when spotlight is directed to the painting.

I like the painting because of the good execution of the simple concept man tree (boom van een kerel) The concept has been worked out clearly with simple means (colors and large areas) The distinction between man and tree is made extra by varnishing the shirt and jacket. Next to this the extra wire literally gives another dimension.

The concept man tree stands central. Some details were added. The trees in the back, the detailed shirt. These make the painting more real and vivid. The tree seems part of a forest and you can unbutton the shirt.

The question which was posed during the workshop was why is a piece of art beautiful. If you have strong emotion for a piece of art you have that feeling for a purpose. Feelings are short-cuts to make us act fast, because something important happens. Every emotion has a reason. I you find out, what created the emotion you are better able to select art of your liking and you are aware why you like the particular works of art.

Some findings of my own. At must be unusual, must make me think or amaze. I also like craftsmanship and a good concept. Both should be present in art.

At the end of the workshop we were asks which work we would buy from the 19. Strangely I chose a work not in the selection of 5 we chose as a couple and which one was not my favorite.

Primavera Art Fair

Last Saturday I went to the Primavera Antiques and Art Fair in Rotterdam. I hadn't been there before so I was wondering what kind of fair this was.

The entrance fee was 10 euro's, but I had a discount and paid half . The parking ticket for my car was 10 euro's. So a parking place near the center of Rotterdam is twice as exclusive as a ticket to Primavera.

When I entered the first piece of art I saw was Balance of Destiny by Robert Heindel. It had a price tag of 120,000 euro's.

That was a mixed signal. It had a price tag. It costs 120.000 euro's, I could buy my half house for that amount. So on the one side the precence of a price tag which means middle or low end, but 120,00 euro's is a huge amount.

If you go to the Dutch high end Art Fairs like ArtRotterdam or ArtAmsterdam price tags are considered tacky. I don't know why: Everyone who has a booth on those fairs wants to make money. But it should be hidden as long as possible. I very soon found out that the painting was with some other paintings from Robert Heindel the only objects this expensive.

So I found out the fair had mainly middle class Dutch art. Most of it was figurative some abstract works. 99% under 10,000 euro's.
I'm only interested in contemporary art. There were about 40 booths with that kind of work. Next to this, jewellery, old instruments, icons and other art from previous centuries.

I like fairs because these are the only places you can compare so many various works of art in a very short time. And all the art is for sale.

This Fair was very Dutch. The art displayed ready tame. No place for Tinkerbel here. Strangely there wasn't much photography either.
An amazing kind of craftmanship I saw in the works from David Begbie. It is a sculpure from steelwire. When behind it a spotlight is placed, the shadow from the scuplture makes a briljant "drawing" from a nude.

At the end of the fair I was wondering if I would buy a work. Before the fair I had intended not to buy anything. My budget for this year has already been depleted. (more about the works I've bought this year later) And there is one fair I allways buy is at Whitsun in Eindhoven so all the money I've got left I will spend there. However the flesh is weak.

Finally I was wise and just bought a bottle like this It was painted by Douke van der Ploeg.

What did I learn: price tags are really handy. I can control myself by not buying art and I still like figurative art but I'm not swept of my feet by it.

My first art collection

Once upon a time I collected stickers together with my sister. Later on I collected footballpictures, sugarbags, chess clippings and finally books.

Now I'm collecting art. More than ten years ago I bought my first painting. That was in a second hand book shop offcourse. I actually han't been to any gallery or art fair. I wasn't really aware those existed. The painting was a nude with incredible long legs lying on a beet red couch with a dark blue wall behind it. I had become an art buyer.
Two years ago I had several dozens of art works and more art than walls. I had become an art collector. Realising this I had to make the next step. What art am I really collecting?

In this Blog I'm searching the answer to this question. I don't know the answer yet. But I'm going to find out.
